Although the survival rate for many cancers has improved over the past two decades this is not the case for primary malignant brain tumour, or glioma. In addition, owing to the relative rarity of glioma, nursing expertise in this area is often limited. This article examines the literature available on the role of the neuro-oncology nurse specialist caring for patients with glioma. Reference is made to the key components required of a clinical nurse specialist, examining how this role contributes to quality of care during the course of the patients’ illness.
