Patients’ views of support after cancer treatment

Carolina Watters Medical student, University of Bristol

Carolina Watters assesses opinions of patients treated for head and neck cancer, and the subsequent development of new services by an ear, nose and throat team

A dramatic reduction in contact with health professionals six months after treatment for head and neck cancer was noted by the ear, nose and throat team at Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. This article discusses the design, implementation and evaluation of a clinical audit that was carried out through use of a questionnaire to determine patients’ opinion on post-treatment care and how support services could be improved. Subsequently, several programmes were suggested and recommendations for changes in practice were identified and acknowledged. New services are being implemented to reflect the results of the audit.
