Chirs Lloyd Independent reviewer of seven-day working in Wales

Patients may need to seek help with pain or symptoms outside normal working hours. Julie Rowlands and colleagues report on the successful introduction of seven-day working by specialist nurses in an inpatient setting

National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (2004) guidance for improving supportive and palliative care for adults with cancer identified a need for specialist teams to provide face-to-face patient assessment seven days a week. In response, seven-day working for clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) in palliative care has been introduced across Wales. In this article, a group of CNSs working in a hospital support palliative care team based in a cancer centre discuss the challenges of implementing seven-day working and an initial evaluation of its effectiveness.
