This article examines the experiences of breast cancer patients who received chemotherapy in their own home compared with those who were treated in hospital. Fifteen patients were randomised to etiher the home or the hospital setting to receive a standard regime of drugs commonly used in the management of breast cancer aimed at preventing recurrence or metastatic spread in early stage disease, and the ‘palliation’ of symptoms of cancer in advanced disease. After the fourth treatment cycle, data were collected using qualitative interviews and analysed. The findings support the notion that the home setting provides a suitable alternative to the hospital for chemotherapy administration, presenting an avenue that may help relieve the rising pressure on chemotherapy unit capacity.
