The NHS Cancer Plan highlights the need to improve and advance cancer services in the community (Department of Health (DH) 2000). This article summarises the ongoing development of a primary care-based team of community cancer nurse specialists (CCNSs) in Poole, Dorset. The team was set up in 2001 to increase support and choice to people with cancer and their carers. The team also helps support the primary healthcare team in a way that complements and advances primary care cancer services. As part of the team’s continual development its role includes supportive care, education, proactive specialist assessment and home treatments. Discussion about the CCNS role focuses on some of the developmental challenges, key learning and plans for future development.
