This article highlights the current challenges in meeting demand capacity facing chemotherapy units across the UK. It discusses the importance of conducting formal capacity and demand studies and describes the development of a nurse demand calculator at the four chemotherapy outpatient departments in the Sussex Cancer Network. The nurse demand calculator is a flexible, dynamic tool that assesses demands of treatment on both chair and nurse capacity.
