A psycho-educational support group for women with ovarian cancer

It has been suggested that group psychological support can have advantages over individual counselling for cancer patients, and that they prefer such groups to be doctor or nurse-led. The literature contains a variety of accounts of the setting up and running, by health professionals, of structured psycho-educational groups for those patients with early disease, mainly women with breast cancers. Two nurses working in the same NHS Trust felt that this approach could also be adapted to the ongoing care of patients with ovarian cancer. They set up and ran a psycho-educational support group for a small number of women with ovarian cancer at either stage 3 or 4. This article describes the processes involved in the development and running of that group.
