Senior nurses must be responsible for safe staffing levels

The fight for safe staffing is vital to the senior nurse role, says Susan Osborne.

Abstract

A newly registered nurse recently told me she was in charge of 30 acute stroke patients on a night shift, with just one other nurse and two healthcare assistants. Another nurse said that inadequate staffing on her ward means she regularly takes her lunch break at 3pm, despite starting her shift at 7.30am.
